After 34 years, the Southern Oregon Adolescent Study and Treatment Center has decided to change its name. The former SOASTC, the region's only large-scale organization, aimed at helping children with serious mental health and behavioral disorders, Will now go by "Kairos," an ancient Greek word meaning the opportune moment when change becomes possible.
Kairos officials say the reason for the change is that "Southern Oregon" and "Adolescent" no longer accurately describe the organization, which now serves young adults from all over the state and occasionally from outside Oregon. The organization plans to open a program for young adults in Lane County within the next year.
In a newsletter, Kairos Chief Executive Officer Bob Lieberman wrote, "We arrived at the name with input from our Board, leadership; and Development Advisory Group, and believe the name itself, along with our mission and values, will help guide us in our work each moment of each day."
